Meet the Schneeballen
Almost immediately after being informed that I would be visiting Rothenburg, Germany on my 2012 European trip, my sister shrieked with joy. Why you may ask? Because of this massive ball of goodness she had once experienced.
Definition: A Schneeball (plural: Schneebälle), snowball in English, is a pastry made from shortcrust pastry especially popular in the area of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Its name derives from its round, ball-like shape with a diameter of about eight to ten centimeters and is traditionally decorated with confectioner's sugar.
The Schneeball is a must-have experience that has been around for more than 300 years. In the beginning, these pastry balls used to only be baked for special occasions, such as weddings. Over the years, they have now found themselves to be sold in several bakeries and cafes, attracting plenty of tourists.
To put its size into perspective, they are a bit bigger than a baseball. Now, the proper way to eat this bundle of joy may be to hammer it and smash it into pieces, but what is the fun of that?! I suggest either throwing it at a wall, having it eat you, or diving in head first.
I personally dove in head first and was a chocolaty mess afterwards, but it was worth it ;)
This pastry comes in several different decadent flavors, in multiple places throughout Rothenburg. If you are up for it, try each cafes' version of the Schneeball - they are all different!
TIP #1: If on a diet, have a cheat day. PLUS, you'll be able to walk it off!
TIP #2: Don't be afraid to get dirty with this thing.
TIP #3: Stock your pockets with plenty of napkins!
The Schneeballen intrigued my tourist palette - let it intrigue yours!
